Fall Fashion In The Heat

The Vogue September issue is on the (virtual) newsstands.

(pause for dramatic effect)

Ok so if you haven’t dropped everything and headed to the closest kiosk or just shrugged because you’ve already memorized every page of the issue, we can conclude that you are either a) not a woman or b) in need of some medical attention. In any case, we would recommend everyone to go out and buy the most important issue of the year.

The great thing about the September issue is that it is 99% ads, so it’s easy to spot the new trends for fall. This year’s issue is filled with beautiful boxy coats we would just want to wrap ourselves in and die happily. Although we wouldn’t want to live in a cold country, it is around this time of the year that our hearts ache for one of those sinfully luxe cashmere coats or a fitted, flairy, bright coloured coat. But enough about the coats.

So what’s the point of buying the September issue if we can’t wear coats on the island? That’s a no brainer: the accessories, bags, shoes and dresses of course! And as a bonus point: we can take the trend and make them fit our Caribbean lifestyle.

5 tips for this season:

1- Mix summer pastels and autumnal tones for a polished look:
The sun usually begs for the airiness of pastels, but why not mix it up with an unexpected deep, rich purple?

2- Mix tough and elegant together:
Autumn usually means cold and drab weather, inspiring millions to refocus their frivolous lifestyle of summer past to         hard-working-gal mentality. Take a cue from this natural process and pair up your cutesy polka dot skirt with a pin striped blouse or light jacket for a day at the office or an evening out. Or opt for a clutch with metal details.

3- Pointy toe court shoes:
Boots might be too hot and too difficult to pull off in warm Caribbean weather, but the pointy toe court shoes that are plastered all over the Vogue pages can be easily worn. Pair court shoes in a traditional fall colour, like garnet or purple, with a black suit for that I-mean-business look or go for the more princess look with a fairytale pair.

4- Take the plaid and run with it…literally:
It might be difficult to pull off a wool plaid skirt (unless you’re a Catholic school girl or Britney circa ‘98 that is) or coat in this weather. But it’s much easier to find that plaid ballet flat to go with any outfit. Or incorporate it in your handbag, a headband or whatever else you can drape or carry around.

5- Warm weather smoky eyes:
According to the Vogue editor fall is all about the feminine touch. Opt for a boyish minimalist look with feminine textures or anything pink, really. And pair that with the warm weather smoky eyes- check out the Daily Candy link for key make-up items and instructions here.
